The South Dakota Office of Tourism announced that visitor spending rose in 2009. Vermillion and Clay County saw a 28 percent increase over the previous year. Emily Miller of Irene was selected as Miss South Dakota USA® 2010. She will compete at the Miss USA pageant in Las Vegas, NV on May 16. February 19, 2010 Local educators team up to write second book. USD professor Gera Jacobs and Kathy Crowley, a St. Agnes teacher, have written “Reaching Standards and Beyond in Kindergarten:Nuturing Children’s Sense of Wonder and Joy in Learning. ” USD student-athletes spend more time outside the classroom because of increased travel with Division I schedules, but are still able to excel in the classroom. Last fall student-athletes obtained a collective 3.148 GPA. The Francis “Bud” and Doris Heine family of Vermillion was honored Feb. 13 as South Dakota State University Family of the Year for 2010. February 26, 2010 Budget issues regarding higher education currently being debated by the South Dakota Legislature were the focus of a student forum held on the USD Campus Monday night. The cast of Up With People gave something back to the Vermillion community. Local young people, ranging in age from kindergarten from St. Agnes School, Page 9 to underclassmen at the University of South Dakota, found themselves in a new world at the Muenster University Center Tuesday, learning about the cultures. March March 5, 2010 A group of veterans associated with Operation Free addressed a small gathering of students in the Muenster University Center. Operation Free is an organization pushing to strengthen national security by encouraging the development of new sources of energy. The Vermillion city government encourages citizens of the community to complete their U.S. Census forms when they receive them. March 12, 2010 The Clay County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a report of a missing person. Barbara Zenk was reported missing on March 6. The Vermillion School District and the University of South Dakota are close to reaching an agreement on using the DakotaDome. The University of South Dakota men’s basketball team clinch the Great West Conference regular-season title. The Coyotes’ 10th consecutive win gave them their first GWC championship. March 19, 2010 A portion of 306th Street, commonly known as Volin Road, near Highway 19 was closed due to the rising water. The Junior Northern Wheelchair Basketball Conference Tournament was held at the Vermillion High School. This 3 event attracted varsity and prep teams from Nebraska, Minnesota and Wisconsin. March 28, 2010 Tanager football will continue at DakotaDome. The Vermillion School Board approved a comprehensive written agreement with the University of South Dakota that will allow at least two more seasons of Tanager high school football to be played in the DakotaDome.
