04 Broadcaster Press February 28, 2012 www.broadcasteronline.com Geu adapting to new role as law school interim dean By Travis Gulbrandson travis.gulbrandson@plaintalk.net For the past 23 years, Thomas Geu has been a professor at the University of South Dakota School of Law. Last July, his duties expanded somewhat when he was named interim dean, a position he will maintain until July 21, 2013. “Dean (Barry) Vickrey decided that he was going to go back to the faculty and teach full-time after 18 years as dean,” Geu said. “The faculty and administration looked at the projects and tasks that we had to do the next while, and decided it would probably be best if we continued with an insider for a couple years to complete those. “We’ll start the national search (for a new dean) next fall, so it really just gives you an extra year to tie up some loose ends. We just have a lot of irons in the fire right now,” he said. So far, the experience has been an enjoyable one, Geu said. “I’m finding that being a dean is not necessarily harder than being a fulltime professor – it’s just different,” he said. “I find that I think about work all the time just like I did when I was a professor, so as far as I can tell there’s not much difference there.” The difference is that instead of mulling over long research projects or his next lecture, he’s dealing with the things that happen on a daily basis which are harder to predict. “You’re making more assessments on things that you didn’t necessarily plan on doing,” he said. Geu said some of the things he has most enjoyed have been visiting with alumni and helping to plan “at least parts of the short-term and intermediate-term future” of the law school. “I was a business and economics major as an undergraduate, and I practiced business law, and I teach in the business law area, so I think that is evidence that I kind of like organizational behavior and finance,” he said. “It’s fun to be on the practice side of those, as opposed to the study side of those, Spotlight On for a little bit.” As for being a professor, Geu said his favorite aspect is interacting with the students, in part because of the different perspective they provide on what is being discussed. He also enjoys research – much of which has a practical basis, he said. “I do a lot of research on limited liability companies and unincorporated business organizations. I’ve researched on cooperatives,” Geu said. “So, things that are pretty close to the ground and of interest in South Dakota and important for economic development. “Laws are no less an infrastructure for economic development than roads. All you have to do is look at the credit card industry in South Dakota and know that some relatively slight but important changes in the law can build the economic foundations of the state,” he said. Geu said some of the other research he performs is more on the academic side. “I would like to prove that law is a complex adaptive system, and therefore that we could learn lessons from those complex adaptive systems that we could to apply to better understand how law works, and how we could make law work better,” he said.
