Late Friday morning, the two, who attend Vermillion Middle School and Jolley Elementary School, respectively, put in a two-hour shift with their dad ringing bells at the Salvation Army kettle located near one of Vermillion Wal-Mart’s entrances. They agreed that the main reason they braved the chilly temperatures and biting wind was to simply help people. A few years ago, the Vermillion Ministerial Association joined forces with the Salvation Army to organize and manage an Emergency Fund here in Vermillion. The Emergency Fund, which has been in operation for more than 20 years, has shared small monetary gifts with local folks or those just passing through who are in dire situations, providing for things like gas, lodging, a hot meal, utility assistance and medicine. The combination of the two organizations has CHRIST OUR SAVIOR Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod: Worship Sunday 6:00 p.m., Bible Study Tuesday, 9:00 p.m., Neuharth Center, 624-5398 or 1-800-998-1234 CHURCH OF CHRIST, 102 Prosp: Sunday Worship 10:00 a.m.; Bible Study 9:00 a.m.; Bible Study 12:00 noon; Wednesday Night Classes, 7:00 p.m. Concordia Lutheran Church (LC-MS) 7 South University Street, Vermillion. (Photo by David Lias) provided a more consistent and comprehensive approach to the growing need for this kind of care. For several years a team of local churches and individuals pieced together this ongoing ministry on the front line. This past year, the VMA centralized the work of this fund by setting an up an office with regular hours at the United Church of Christ staffed by volunteers. The number of people who need this service continues to grow. The good news is that Congratulations! It is hoped that local shoppers will contribute whenever they pass one of red kettles. It is also hoped that people will donate a couple of hours to ring bells this season. One or two ringers (or a whole family) are needed at each station around Vermillion (Wal-Mart, HyVee and Ace) on weekends and evenings. The campaign began on Friday, Nov. 29 and will continue through Sunday Dec. 22. Every moment of bellringing translates into the possibility of real help for someone in need. Interested individuals may sign up to ring though the UCC. For more information, call Diane Leja at 624-3120 or e-mail uccv@uccvermillion.com.
