Broadcaster Press 03 July 15, 2014 www.broadcasteronline.com Practice makes perfect at 2014 USD Summer Music Camp By Travis Gulbrandson travis.gulbrandson@plaintalk.net Practice hopefully will make perfect for several hundred students staying at the University of South Dakota this week. Approximately 170 students from the quadstate area – and some even farther – have taken up temporary residents at the university as part of the 2014 USD Summer Music Camp. They arrived for registration Sunday and will conclude with concerts on Thursday and Friday. “Everybody learns (the pieces) when they get here, so they have rehearsals throughout the week … and put on the presentation of their hard work at the end of the week,” said Dr. David Holdhusen, director of choral activities for USD. The first concert will take place Thursday at 7 p.m. in Aalfs Auditorium, and will be performed by what Holdhusen termed the “ancillary ensembles.” “They are not the concert groups, so that’s going to be your jazz bands, your show choirs, our percussion ensembles,” he said. The second concert will be at 11:45 a.m. at Colton Recital Hall, and Consider it... will feature the small chamber groups, including the chamber strings, chamber choir and opera class. The final concert is at 7 p.m. Friday in Aalfs Auditorium, with three concert bands, two concert choirs and the orchestra performing. Holdhusen said the students, who range in ages from those who have completed the fifththrough 12th grades, rehearse for an amount of time based on the groups in which they are participating. “The concert ensembles and the groups that do the Thursday night concert generally have two 45-minute rehearsals each day, plus a 45-minute sectional each day, as well,” Holdhusen said. “The opera class and some of those classes that present at the chamber recital just have usually one 45-minute rehearsal a day.” Qualifications for camp attendance are A special “Thank You” for the cards, gifts, ?owers, and best wishes shared with me on my 90th Birthday. They just sign up and indicate what ensembles they want to be a part of, what classes they want to be a part of, any lessons that they might want to take, and send it in.” There are many returning campers, he added, with some attending their second, third or fourth times – and one camper their seventh. It’s a great experience for everyone involved, Holdhusen said. “I love the fact that on Sunday these students get here and have no preconceived ideas on anything,” he said. “They get here, we give them the music on Sunday, and come Thursday and Friday we have 10 ensembles that are presenting concerts. “I love the process of the week and seeing these kids from all over the region coming together and not knowing each other, and at the end making music. That’s the most rewarding part of the camp for me, and it makes all the work that we do leading up to it worth it,” he said. The concerts performed by the campers are free and open to the public.
