By Alan Dale alan.dale@plaintalk.net Before marriage and parenthood, death and taxes, there comes another rite of passage: College move-in day. A number of new freshmen at the University of South Dakota moved in to their dorm rooms with the help of their parents, but also, especially, from a number of volunteers that made up a move-in day crew to make the process that much easier. The crew consists of current returning USD students who have been in the same position as deer in headlights first-year college students. “Ever since I have started they do this,” senior Cory Hewitt said. “For us it’s a way to get our (fraternity) name out there because we have our letters on our back and also it’s a way to make the transition easier for the families when they come. It’s so that they don’t have to worry so much about moving stuff in and worry more about saying goodbye.” Hewitt said that even though it is a voluntary system the Greek system really gets involved for multiple reasons such as recruitment but also to do right by their fellow students, thus making being a part of the move in process so vital. “The fraternities and sororities make it a mandatory thing within their houses,” Hewitt said. The parents and the new students appreciated the hard work the move in crew provided. “It makes it very smooth, very quick, it’s very helpful,” new freshman Caitlyn Bolte, of Pierre, said. “It’s actually really cool because it’s a way to meet people and they do it for you.” Bolte’s move was predicated on her desire to enter the medical field. “I am excited,” she said. “I am looking forward to seeing what USD brings. I wanted to do a medical field and the classes here are more medical Men’s & Women’s Walking, Running, Waterproof Boston Shoes• 665-9092 to Boots 312 W. 3rd • Yankton Caitlyn and Connie Bolte prepare to say goodbye as daughter prepares for her first days at USD while mother holds back tears. (Alan Dale) nani 1270 oriented.” She also knows her family isn’t that far away even if she believes she is fine on her own. “Family is close by, but I can do my own laundry,” Bolte said. “I cook, clean, so I am self-sufficient.” Her mother Connie would agree even with tears in her own eyes. “I am going to cry,” Connie said as her daughter looked on with a bit of wetness in her own eyes as well. “This is my first one to go to college, but she’s ready. She’s my easy one, she’s really selfsufficient. She makes the grades and school is important to her. Hopefully she will enjoy her studies and have some fun.” Kathy Woodall was moving in her own daughter after the family trekked over from Cherokee, Iowa. “I am happy and excited for her,” Woodall said. “I am both excited Estate Auction Lincoln County, SD Acreage, Machinery, Personal Property Auction wife realize they have their whole home to themselves. “With that empty nest the wife and I are going to have to get reacquainted,” Norton said. “It’s a different feeling. We do all this stuff for our kids all these years and now it’s going to be different and an adjustment.” Overall Hewitt said that the experience of moving the freshmen and new students in went well. He doesn’t see the typical freshmen goofiness or over-the-top distraught looks one would see in a feature film. “The freshmen are pretty cool and I think we get a lot of good freshmen,” Hewitt said. “They come in here and you kinda get that jittery feeling from them and they are overwhelmed a bit, but they stay cool. I think this is a helpful process for them.” and nervous. I have four kids and she’s the second oldest and so I have two little ones at home who are really going to miss her.” It’s not so much about fear of leaving a child behind as it is coming to the realization they won’t be around much anymore. “She’s a good kid and has a good head on her shoulders so I am not really that worried about her,” Woodall said. “But I am going to miss her.” A father of three kids, Joe Norton of Sioux City, was wrapping up moving in his youngest when he took time out to share some thoughts. “She’s our last of our three kids and now they are all out of the roost,” Norton said. “It’s a little awkward and exciting to see them spread their wings and start their journey.” His own new journey begins when he and the HEINE Electric and Irrigation Hartington, NE (402) 254-2568 Vermillion, SD (605) 670-9567 ALL TYPES OF DIRT WORK.
