Broadcaster Press 03 January 13, 2015 www.broadcasteronline.com The Heartbeat of Vermillion Getting to know Beth Knedler of the Vermillion Public Library By Katie Clausen For the Plain Talk Vermillion residents who remember the era of the ‘old’ library will remember the heavy black doors, smell of old books, and the click made by passing through the turn style to gain access to the circulation desk. Many memories were made by Vermillion youth and adults alike by having lock in slumber parties in the library conference room, or working on a computer for, maybe, the first time. If the memory of the old library lay-out invokes feelings of invitation, the new library is no different. With its bright lights and familiar paper scent it welcomes community members, of all ages, into its literary arms. This building, books, and services however wouldn’t be available without people such as Beth Knedler, the Youth Service Librarian at the Edith B. Siegrist Vermillion Public Library. “Kids come from St. Agnes, Jolley, Austin and sometimes even Middle School,” Knedler said. “Getting the kids in is the hardest part.” Knedler is discussing her approach to after school programs, which she hosts every Thursday. I got certified at USD.” Knedler started out in the public school district, but when an opportunity came along, she grabbed it. “I was at the Middle School doing half time library and half time art,” Knedler said. “And then this opened up.” Knedler puts an artistic spin on the programs she helps develop for youth. While she does story time both in house at the library and out of house at the local day care and at schools, she continues to come up with programs that are creative and inviting to kids. Story time schedules have been made for the spring 2015 session, and are broken down into age groups to make sure the kids get as much as possible out of the readings. In addition to focusing on reading with youth, Knedler is making sure she explores all of her options. “I’m going to be starting a few new things at the end of the month,” Knedler said. “I’ve sent out some invitations.” It is Knedler’s roll to determine how to make sure youth in the Vermillion community have fulfilling experiences. “The teens are the hardest,” Knedler said. “They come in, but they just want to talk sometimes. Which is okay.” While getting youth into a library is harder than it has ever been before, Knedler knows how to pull at the heartstrings of kids, using the popular building blocks, Legos. “This gets filled,” Knedler said, gesturing towards the west wall of the building. “The kids just go into the Kozak room and just make whatever.” The sense of the library is not lost on Lego time, however. “I’ve got paper in there in case they want to tell stories about their Legos,” Knedler said. “Because they all have stories, every single piece has a story.” Knedler feels as though Lego building is the most popular youth activity at the Library, but art, which is also her passion, comes in at a close second. “The second Thursday after school I do art,” Knedler said. “And then the fourth Thursday I’ll have a program called ‘open studio’ where kids can come and pick what they want to do.” As the Youth Service Librarian, it is Knedler’s job to not only help children explore books and literacy for all it has to offer, but also use her expertise to help them engage in activities they may not get to experience elsewhere. “It’s not so much crafting, but more art,” Knedler said. “That is my background.” Knedler is thankful for the platform the library gives her while working with local youth. “Having the ability to Tell them you saw it in the Broadcaster!
