10 Broadcaster Press ? USD From Page 3 founded in 1993 and became the resident theater company at the Autry National Center in 1999. The company works to develop new pieces by Native American, Alaska Native and First Nations playwrights. “It is widely respected in both the Native American and theatre communities for its breakthrough plays and diverse programming, which highlight unique points of view within the more than 500 Native American nations in North America,” the website reads. Along with the visiting cast members, three key roles will be played by USD students, including the lead. USD students and faculty are also designing the sets, projections, lights and sound. “The director who’s coming from LA is originally with the Native Voices,” Ramirez said. “I feel comfortable with him.” Though Ramirez said she February 24, 2015 www.broadcasteronline.com has had a good amount of say in the production and will be in town for the performances, she recognizes that the director has to have a little creative license. “The director is the captain of the ship,” she said. “I just designed the ship and the actors are the crew. It changes with his point of view. They can’t change the script but there’s always a way for people’s point of view to come across. It’s nerve-wracking but it’s fun too.” The play’s subject hits very close to home for Ramirez. Ramirez grew up in a town that borders her mother’s reservation. “We spent more than half our week on the reservation,” she said. “When we needed someone to watch us as kids we’d be at grandpa’s house on the reservation.” Ramirez said while her mother is Native American, her father is Jamaican. Growing up Ramirez said she saw prejudice that many believe has died out. “My brother got beaten up for talking to a blonde girl,” she said. “People told me I’m lucky I’m mixed because I can pass for white. it’s pretty funny after a while.” The land dispute issue her play is based on is also something she has seen first-hand. “It’s happened in my hometown and on my mom’s reservation in 2010,” she said. “A realtor claimed he was given land rights to build on reservation territory and the Indians said they never gave him the rights. It escalated into shots fired and people knocking things over in protest. They sent federal troops in too.” According to Ramirez, another example happened in the late 90’s. “They actually sent the national guard up to Seneca reservations because of breaking sovereign treaty rights,” she said. “It’s happened to us quite a bit.” Ramirez spoke of yet another dispute in 1990 where the town of Oka in Canada wanted to expand a golf course and residential area into traditional Mohawk lands. This dispute also escalated into protests, firefights and a siege. While this is a serious and deeply personal topic, Ramirez said she hopes people have a good time as well. “I do think as theater makers yes we have a message, yes we have a purpose,” she said. “But the number one priority is to entertain people. I don’t want them to feel frustrated or lectured at. I want them entertained and maybe have some questions. I enjoy seeing smiles and hearing them laugh. I’m really excited to bring it to South Dakota. It’s a great opportunity to bring it to a crowd that maybe doesn’t know the story and get their reaction and see their take on it.” For an extended version of this story visit www.plaintalk.net. Audience members will have the opportunity to participate in a discussion about the play after each performance. “I hope they’re curious about the people involved,” Ramirez said. “I’m also looking forward to hear what interests them, what engages them about the play. It doesn’t have to be necessarily what I want it to be.” Ramirez said her goal with the play is to help people see from her and her fellow Native Americans’ point of view. “We’re very current and very present,” she said. “You may not recognize us immediately when you see us in the background but we’re here. Things are still happening. We’re here, we’re trying to exist in our own way. I want people to connect with us as we are now not as who we were.” Tickets to the show are $15 for adults, $12 for Senior Citizens, $10 for youth and non-USD students and $5 for USD students with ID.
