With their production of Macbeth, the SDSF plans to thrill and chill its audience, in a play that explores the quest for power, the dangers of vaulting ambition, fate vs. free will, and the frailty of the human condition. The production features an allstar company of seasoned professionals hired from competitive national and regional markets, USD theatre faculty, and younger professionals drawn from USD’s Theatre program. In addition to the fulllength Shakespeare production, the SDSF will feature live music in Prentis Park, along with vending of food and beverages, beginning at 6pm each evening. Workshops and educational programming for all ages will be offered throughout the four days of the Festival. Advance registration for workshops is recommended through the Vermillion Parks and Recreation website: http://www.vermillionparksandrec.com/ Youth_Programs.php A special Scholars’ Roundtable Discussion, hosted by USD’s College of Arts and Sciences and Department of English, will take place at 3pm on Sunday June 14th in Prentis Park. Join national and international Shakespeare scholars as they lead a discussion on past productions of Macbeth, the choices made in this production, and enduring questions of what makes Macbeth so special. In keeping with the SDSF’s mission of accessibility, all programs are free and open to the public. “Free Will” donations are welcomed. In advance of the Festival, the SDSF will be performing special preview performances of Macbeth for the Senior Care Center at Sanford Vermillion and at SESDAC, in order to expand their reach to a broader demographic and share the wonders and joys of Shakespeare and live theatre with a wider audience base. Additonal benefits include reduced soil erosion, improved water quality and enriched soil health. Postcards were previously mailed to known landowners in this area. However, if you own land in the above watersheds but were not notified, give this opportunity consideration. To learn more, plan to attend the TLC-EQIP Workshop at the SDSU Beresford Research Farm on Wednesday afternoon, June 10th, 2015, from 1:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m., sponsored by the USDA NRCS and Turner-Lincoln-Clay organization. Some of the voluntary conservation practices that landowners may incorporate into their farming operations to enhance soil health and conserve water include: cover crops, crop rotation, residue and tillage management, introduction of ponds, riparian herbaceous buffers and filter strips. Those landowners or operators within the priority area are eligible to apply. For more information about this effort contact your local USDA Service Center. For the 2nd year in a row, the National Music Museum (NMM) has been named one of “the best properties in the world” by TripAdvisor.com, the world’s largest internet travel site. The TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence is “a prestigious award that can only be earned through consistently great reviews.” The honor signifies that the NMM is “one of the very best in the business.” NMM spokesperson Patricia Bornhofen says that “this stamp of approval is compelling because it represents the freely-offered opinions of all kinds of travelers. In effect, it’s a people’s choice award.” TripAdvisor.com also ranks the NMM as Vermillion’s #1 attraction. Says Bornhofen, “Vermillionites really should exercise their bragging rights. They have one of the world’s finest music museums right in their community.” The Museum is also in the middle of a capital campaign, working to raise funds for the redesign and physical expansion of the Museum. “With 15,000 artifacts in our holdings — 1,200 on public display — we need far more space,” says Bornhofen. “We’d love to see every business and family in the area join and support us as Museum members.” A special draw at the NMM this summer is the limited-time exhibit “Banding Together – The American Soldier’s Music Arsenal,” which showcases rare historic instruments issued to or used by U.S. soldiers throughout American military history. It also features rare wartime photos, posters, sheet music, uniforms, and other fascinating artifacts. The National Music Museum’s summer hours through Labor Day are 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday; Sunday, 1:00-5:00pm. The Museum is located in the middle of Vermillion, on the corner of East Clark and Yale streets, on the campus of the University of South Dakota. More information at nmmusd.org.
