Tilton got onto the fact the first of the week that a fellow by the name of Peter Cox was operating a booze and gambling joint in the Missouri River just out from the South Dakota shore up in Norway township. He immediately took the necessary steps for the proper punishment of the offender. A warrant was sworn out in Justice Danforth’s court, and Sheriff Gunderson and Officer Sullivan went up there to serve it. They found the place and walked in on the proprietor unannounced, and took him by surprise. He submitted to the arrest in good humor, and came with Officer Sullivan to Vermillion, while Sheriff Gun- CALL derson got another team and brought the fellow’s outfit and booze to this city. They described his place of business as being located in the river and easily accessible from the shore. He has a house-boat all fitted up in regular saloon style, and painted with the legend: “Saloon – Whiskey and Beer for Sale – Minors Not Allowed.” He has been located and doing business there for several weeks, and had a good trade, and would undoubtedly have still been doing business had not Mr. Tilton got onto the fact and proceeded to cut his business short. Cox is a Kentuckian, coming from the moonshine districts of that State. He has been in South Dakota for some time, and has lived most of the time at Brookings, belonging to the TODAY! Woodmen and Redmen lodges there. He is uneducated, being neither able to read nor write. He was arraigned in Justice Danforth’s court on Wednesday morning, and waived examination and was bound over to the Circuit Court, his bonds being placed at $150. Judge Smith will be down from Yankton some day next week, and hold a special term of court to sentence Cox, as he will plead guilty to the charge, and commence sentence at once.
