If only Dell Rapids wasn’t so good, some may wonder if a Class A state boys’ golf title could have belonged to the Vermillion Tanagers in 2014. Bouncing back from an unexpectedly pedestrian round of 349 Monday the Tanagers shot a secondday total of 315 the next day to claim the secondplace trophy with a total of 664, which left them 38 strokes behind the champion Dell Rapids team. Dell Rapids shot 301 on Tuesday to claim the top prize while Vermillion beat third-place Parkston by 17 strokes. "We knew we were capable of a 315 this year and to do it at state on the final round was a great finish," said Vermillion head coach Kirk Hogen. "We had a great year. We didn't lose a dual or a quad and we never finished below fourth in an invitational. I couldn't be more proud of the guys.” Tanagers Carter Andre and Cooper Williams were on fire in the final rounds as they finished with twoday totals of 157 apiece to finish tied for third-place. Williams shot a Tuesday best 73 (along with state champion, Adam Karst of Dell Rapids), while Andre carded a 74. The two made up a 20-stroke, combined improvement from the first day. Karst won with a 147 while Aberdeen Roncalli’s Gabe Heller took second place with a 154. Vermillion’s Andrew Heine (171) and Paul Schwasinger (180) recorded scoring totals while Jake Odens (182) also competed. The strong Tanagers’ squad will have to replace three seniors who made such a big difference this season. "The three seniors, Andre, Heine, and Odens were great seniors to have on the team this year," Hogen said.
