The season opens Sept. 25-Oct. 4 with William Inge’s comedy “Bus Stop.” It’s March 1955 when a freak snowstorm forces an interstate bus of passengers to pull over and take shelter in a rural diner just outside of Kansas City. It shows what bad weather can do to our emotions and attitude toward others. USD actors next travel to Transylvania and produce one of Mel Brooks’ famous comedies, “Young Frankenstein,” from Nov. 20-Dec. 6. All characters from the film make their way to stage in this energetic musical as Fredrick Frankenstein creates a creature just like his infamous grandfather with the help of Igor and Inga. In the spring, the department moves from hilarity to the shadowy world of playwright Martin McDonaugh as it presents his dark comedy “The Pillowman” Feb. 18-21. This play contains adult themes and languages as the audience watches fiction writer Katurian being interrogated by two police about some gruesome child murders. The main stage season concludes April 14-24 with Stephen Sondheim’s musical “Assassins.” This Tony Award winning musical brings to life people who attempted or achieved the assassination of U.S. presidents. The assassins share stories, meet and discuss issues and inspire each other as they pursue their idea of the American dream. All USD Theatre Department performances are in the Wayne S. Knutson Theatre on the USD campus with evening performances at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. Season tickets, which provide a 25 percent discount, are $45 for adults, $36 for seniors (62+), $30 for youth (K-12) and nonUSD students, and $15 for USD students with a valid ID. A form for ordering season tickets can be downloaded from www.usd.edu/theatre or requested by calling 605-6775400 or emailing theatre@ usd.edu. 5K Run/Walk to Help USD Students And Promote Suicide Awareness Is Sept. 12 5K Run/Walk to Help USD Students and Promote Suicide Awareness is Sept. 12 The Nikki’s Fund 5K Run/Walk to help University of South Dakota students in crisis situations and also promote suicide prevention awareness throughout the region will be Saturday, Sept. 12, as part of National Suicide Prevention Week. “Over the years, Nikki’s Fund and the Nikki’s Fund 5K have provided great support to USD students struggling with mental health-related concerns, including suicidal thoughts and intent,” said Debra Brockberg, director of the USD Student Counseling Center. “The funds have provided financial support to students in need of medical assistance, lab work, funding for medication and diagnostic testing for mental health concerns, as well as travel costs to and from appointments.” The 2015 race/walk starts at 9 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 12, at Prentis Park, which is also the finish line, with runners and walkers navigating a street course through downtown Vermillion. The 15th Annual Great Akron Scarecrow Festival will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 19, and will feature the scarecrow decorating contest, homemade food and baked goods, kids’ games and activities, a petting zoo, and more than 50 vendors. The festival is hosted and organized by members of the Akron Friendship & Service Club, a non-profit charitable and service organization that is part of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC). The 40 women in the club created the festival as a fundraiser to support community and school projects in the Akron and Westfield areas. What started as a small event has grown to attract visitors, competitors and vendors from throughout northwest Iowa and southeast South Dakota. “It is amazing to see how the Scarecrow Festival has grown over the years and how it has become an annual fall tradition for so many families,” said Barb Johnson, member of GFWC/ Iowa Friendship & Service Club and one of the festival coordinators. “With the scarecrow decorating contest, shopping vendors, homemade food and baked goods, and lots of kids’ activities, there is truly something for every one of all ages to kick off the fall season.” The highlight of the festival is the scarecrow decorating contest. Contestants of all ages create and decorate scarecrows of all sizes, shapes and themes to compete for $600 in cash prizes. Scarecrows are judged in three age categories: preschool through 5th grade, 6th through 12th grade, and adult. Participants are encouraged to be creative with both the themes and materials used for creating their scarecrows. From minions to Duck Dynasty stars, to superheroes and local community leaders, it is always fun to see what personalities the scarecrow decorators choose to create each year. Details about the contest and photos of past winners are available at www.AkronScarecrowFestival.com. For festival goers who would like to take the fall fun home with them, an auction of the scarecrow entries will be held at 2:00 p.m. All scarecrows entered in the Adult and 6th through 12th grade categories will be auctioned. Children in the preschool through 5th grade category can decide whether to take their scarecrows home or auction them. Children will keep busy all day with carnival games, minitrain rides, inflatables and a free petting zoo. Face painting and glitter tattoos are also available. Festival visitors won’t leave hungry. Food booths and vendors will feature taverns, hot dogs, tacos-in-a-bag, homemade pies, kettle corn, funnel cakes, and other fall treats. The “Nature’s Harvest” store includes hundreds of homemade breads, cakes, pies and treats made by Friendship & Service Club members for purchase. More than 50 vendors will offer crafts, clothing, popular brand products, and food for sale. The festival raises thousands of dollars each year to support projects and organizations that benefit everyone in the Akron area community. Funds raised from the 2014 Scarecrow Festival were used to support projects across the community including sponsoring the children’s theater performance at the Akron Opera House, improving t-ball fields in Westfield, building a new concession stand and bathrooms at Lefty Swift little league baseball field, supporting student groups and classroom needs at Akron-Westfield Community Schools and purchasing equipment for the Akron Care Center. The Friendship and Service Club also supports scholarships for students, summer reading program at the Akron Library, annual holiday gifts for families in need, and a number of other community projects.
